Jain, who is 31 and the son of Indian immigrants, and has no prior experience in office, said he knows there will be many who will question his candidacy. But he said elected experience is not the only quality needed to serve. As Maryland becomes younger and more diverse, he said, “decisions about us should not be made without us.”
The former director of outreach for then-Vice President Joe Biden’s Cancer Moonshot initiatives, Jain says he’s running a grassroots campaign and not taking any money from developers, business, or political action committees and has shared the most detailed policy agenda, including the “Maryland Now” Plan that Jain says will eliminate the state income tax for 95% of Marylanders and create a guaranteed jobs program for Maryland residents.
Jain said: “As a 32-year-old cancer survivor, as a son of immigrants and small business owners, as a product of Maryland public schools, and as someone who has worked in the public, private and nonprofit sectors, including the Obama White House and in two federal agencies, I think those are the perspectives that we need in the governor’s office more than ever.”

LaTrece Hawkins Lytes (Democratic Party) is running for election for Lieutenant Governor of Maryland. Hawkins Lytes is on the ballot in the Democratic primary on July 19, 2022.
Longtime Maryland resident, wife, mother of four, juvenile Type 1 diabetes survivor, transplant recipient, and a community activist.
Lytes, who was born in Baltimore and raised in Prince George’s County, has worked in advocacy roles with the University of Maryland Medical Center, Maryland Endocrine, the First Baptist Church of Highland Park and the American Diabetes Association, according to a news release from Jain’s campaign.
