Immunization shots are given to students to protect them from contagious viral diseases. The increase of contagious diseases has caused an increase in immunization shots.

There are controversies around these shots: do they harm students? Is there proof that these vaccines work? Can children get the vaccine off schedule when parents think it’s the right time? In other words, giving children the vaccine later gives the child immune system time to develop, and parents more time to determine what are the child’s allergies. Furthermore, can a student receive another form of immunization that can protect him/her from viral diseases? Also, parents like to know if a student can receive another form of immunization that can protect him/her from viral diseases. Knowing this info can prevent injury or worst–death. Parents want to know what is in these vaccines.

Also, vaccines made of weakened or killed disease antigens (viruses or bacteria) contain minimal amounts of other ingredients – excipients (substance such as starch) or media (blood or lymph cells) that forms a vehicle for a drug to be made.

Some excipients are added to a vaccine for a specific purpose.

These include:

Preservatives such as thimerosal, to prevent contamination. Adjuvants such as aluminum salts, to help stimulate a stronger immune response. Stabilizers such as sugar or gelatin, to keep the vaccine potent during transportation and storage.

Other excipients are residual trace amounts of materials that were used during the manufacturing process and removed. These include:

Cell culture materials (egg protein and various culture forms) used to grow the vaccine antigens.

Inactivating ingredients such as formaldehyde is used to kill viruses or inactivate toxins. Antibiotics such as neomycin are used to prevent contamination by bacteria.

Some vaccines are necessary for school, and others are not. The FDA’s website http://www.fda.gov/BiologicsBloodVaccines/Vaccines/ApprovedProducts/ucm093833.htm contains a description of the vaccine’s manufacturing process, including the amount and purpose of each substance.

Below is a list of immunization shots and their ingredients.
