Maryland experienced a special election because of the U.S. Representative Elijah Cummings’s death. District 7 congressional seat is vacant in congress, so the Governor granted a special election to fill the position.
The primary election produced over two dozen candidates in the democratic party, including U.S. Rep. Elijah Cummings’s wife, Maya Rockeymoore Cummings; however, only one prevailed–Kweisi Mfume. He will participate in the “Special” General election on April 28, 2020. Early voting is Apr. 16 – Apr. 23, 2020.
The special election coincides with the permanent election. It permits the winner to reside in Cummings’s seat until the term is up. The stable polls is a “primary” election for candidates who are to participate in the regular general election.
