DUTY – Oath, sacred or solemn voluntary promise usually involves the penalty of divine retribution for intentional falsity and is often used in legal procedures.

PROMISE – An oath is a public pledge that a person will perform some action or duty, generally, with the promise of doing so truthfully. … Today, oaths are required in many circumstances. In the legal system, a person must make an oath or affirmation that they will testify truthfully, also called a witness oath. It is a fundamental human impulse to ground our vows in something greater than ourselves, which carries with it connotations of worship.

According to state law, violating an oath or affirmation is a crime for public officers and employees who took an oath of office. Doctors and presidents, of course, aren’t the only people who take oaths. There are oaths for new citizens, nurses, lawyers, pharmacists, military recruits, Boy Scouts, and even people who have earned an MBA.

Some people perceive job positions requiring an oath to lead to better behavior.

Others have lost the communal respect for behavioral governance by oath; therefore, an oath of allegiance, an oath of office or marriage vows are not seen as a whole because people don’t treat oaths in a serious way

Evolution of Oaths

  • Several medical schools are allowing students to either write their oaths or recite an updated version of the Hippocratic oath, once standard at graduation ceremonies for new physicians.
  • Married couples who forsake their wedding vows suggest that spoken promises wield little power in the modern age. Some remove the word “Obey.”
  • The oath of enlistment for new military recruits, for example, offers the option to say “affirm” instead of “swear.”
