Climate change affects global temperature and precipitation patterns. These effects, in turn, influence the intensity and, in some cases, the frequency of extreme environmental events, such as forest fires, hurricanes, heat waves, floods, droughts, and storms.

Global warming is caused by gases such as carbon dioxide trapping solar radiation in the Earth’s atmosphere, making the climate warmer. This is commonly known as the greenhouse effect

Earth’s average temperature will reach 1.5ºC above preindustrial levels at about 2030, a UN assessment has found.

The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change was published on Monday and said the tipping point would arrive a decade earlier than projected only three years ago.

Furthermore, the threshold will be breached by about 2050, no matter how aggressively humanity draws down carbon pollution.

The IPCC [ International Plant Protection Convention] report said the levels of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere are higher than they have been in two million years, and methane and nitrous oxide concentration is higher than any point in at least 800,000 years.

The IPPC was created by the Food and Agriculture Organization, to protect against infestation, especially when shipping food products.

CAUSES

The cause of current climate change is largely human activity, like burning fossil fuels, like natural gas, oil, and coal. Burning these materials releases what are called greenhouse gases into Earth’s atmosphere.

The main causes of climate change are:
      • Humanity’s increased use of fossil fuels – such as coal, oil, and gas to generate electricity, run cars and other forms of transport, and power manufacturing and industry.
      • Deforestation – because living trees absorb and store carbon dioxide.

 

WHY IS THE TEMPERATURE OF THE WATER IMPORTANT

The temperature characteristics of a region are influenced by natural factors such as latitude, elevation, and the presence of ocean currents. The precipitation characteristics of a region are influenced by factors such as proximity to mountain ranges and prevailing winds.

More frequent and intense droughts, storms, heatwaves, rising sea levels, melting glaciers, and warming oceans can directly harm animals, destroy the places they live, and wreak havoc on people’s livelihoods and communities. As climate change worsens, dangerous weather events are becoming more frequent or severe.

When human activities create greenhouse gases, Earth warms. This matters because oceans, land, air, plants, animals, and energy from the Sun all have an effect on one another. The combined effects of all these things give us our global climate. In other words, Earth’s climate functions like one big, connected system.

A description of a climate includes information on, e.g. the average temperature in different seasons, rainfall, and sunshine. Also, a description of the (chance of) extremes is often included.

According to the International Energy Agency, around $3.5 trillion is required between now [2020] and 2050 to meet targets for a “sustainable path.” 


NATURAL DISASTERS

Although Mother Nature is responsible for natural disasters, mankind is responsible for their intensity. Due to the ocean waters’ warming, hurricanes are much more intense and bigger. Causing death and billions of dollars of destruction and death.

The rise of water levels causes surges to be higher when hurricanes hit land. Warm water fuels the speed and size of hurricanes. The water carried by them causes death-defining flooding and food insecurity. The cost of property damage is in the billions and people are displaced by the loss of their homes, loved ones, and security. Those who have no homeowners’ may not be able to rebuild.

Lightning is one of the two natural causes of fires. 

Wildfires can disrupt transportation, communications, power and gas services, and water supply. They also lead to a deterioration of the air quality, and loss of property, crops, resources, animals, and people.

Although wildfires produce a number of greenhouse gases and aerosols including carbon dioxide, methane, and black carbon, the plants that re-colonize burned areas remove carbon from the atmosphere, generally leading to a net neutral effect on climate.

Tornadoes are wind energy that forms from warm, moist, unstable air at ground level like the Gulf of Mexico.; cool dry air higher up; and wind shear, which is the change in wind speed or direction. While climate change is increasing the energy in the atmosphere, it’s expected to reduce wind shear.

Overall temperature and humidity, which provide energy in the air, may rise with a warming climate, but wind shear may not.

Multiple studies find that the conditions that produce the most severe thunderstorms from which tornadoes may form are more likely as the world warms. Some research has suggested that climate change will create conditions more favorable for the formation of severe thunderstorms and tornadoes.

 Melting glaciers and thermal expansion of oceans from climate change may also contribute to another earthquake-related hazard. Rising seas are raising the water table in many places of the world, which can translate to an increased tendency for liquefaction during earthquakes.
 Liquefaction occurs when loosely packed, water-logged sediments at or near the ground surface lose their strength in response to strong ground shaking. It was signed during the Christchurch, New Zealand earthquake in 2011. The impact of sea level rise on liquefaction has been studied recently by Quilter et al. (2015) who examined several different sea level rise scenarios for the South Island, where Christchurch is located. The study found a several-fold increase in the number of properties that would be damaged depending on the amount of sea level rise and the magnitude of the earthquake.

Heavy Rainfall – Earthquakes in the Himalayas have been linked to heavy rainfall in the region. The extra weight causes plates to move horizontally as well as vertically.

Climate impacts have been found to modulate the timing of earthquakes in California and increase rainfall.

Reduced Atmospheric Pressure – Liu et al. (2008) found that the lower pressure associated with a typhoon results in a very small unclamping of the fault that must be close to the failure condition for the typhoon to act as a trigger.

This effect relieves stress from building up that would otherwise cause stronger earthquakes. Climate change will bring stronger typhoons with lower central pressure but even an expected 10% reduction in the center-to-periphery pressure will not likely have an increased impact on this effect.

The connection of seismic activity to climate—from melting ice or changes in rainfall patterns has, however, been demonstrated using historical information and there is relatively high confidence that glacial melt and heavy rainfall events will continue to increase.


HUMAN ACTIVITIES

The National found out the five main culprits for this increase in greenhouse gases

1. Fossil fuels

Gases such as carbon dioxide and methane trap heat in the Earth’s atmosphere. They are mostly created by humans burning fossil fuels – coal, oil, wood, and natural gas.

Climate change activists say humans must stop burning these energy sources, and countries and companies need to pledge zero-emission targets.

2. Deforestation

Since about 1960, forests, soil and oceans have steadily absorbed 56 percent of all the carbon dioxide humanity has put into the atmosphere, despite the 50 percent rise in emissions.

But trees are being cut down at an alarming rate, in particular in the Amazon rainforest.

It was traditionally viewed as the lungs of the planet, absorbing carbon dioxide and releasing oxygen. But figures released in June showed deforestation approached record levels last year.

A total of 8,712 square kilometers of forest cover – almost the size of Puerto Rico – was destroyed from August 2020 to July 2021, according to satellite data from Brazil’s space agency INPE.

The consequence is that not enough carbon dioxide is being soaked up from the Earth’s atmosphere.

3. Increasing livestock farming

Intensive farming of livestock adds to greenhouse gases.

Growing demand for meat has led to an intensive agriculture of animals.

Cows and sheep produce large amounts of methane when they digest their food, and this gas adds to the greenhouse effect on the Earth.

Furthermore, animals need fields to graze on, and this leads to deforestation.

Climate change activists suggest humans should choose to eat less meat.

4. Fertilisers containing nitrogen

Intensive farming quickly exhausts the naturally occurring nutrients in the soil, farmers, therefore, use fertilizers to boost their agricultural output.

But fertilizers containing nitrogen produce nitrous oxide emissions, which increases the warming effect on the Earth’s atmosphere.

Other fertilizers, such as green manure and compost, blood meal, bone meal, and seaweed extracts are available. Crop rotation can increase the nutrients in the soil naturally.

5. Fluorinated gases

These particularly damaging gases are emitted from equipment and products such as commercial and industrial refrigerators, air-conditioning systems, and heat pumps.

They are also used as blowing agents for foams, fire extinguishers, solvents, and aerosol propellants.

Such emissions have a very strong warming effect, up to 23,000 times greater than that of carbon dioxide.

There are options other than fluorinated gases. For instance, hydrocarbons and ammonia, used in refrigeration, are considered safe and energy-efficient.

Government should mandate the use of commercial and industrialized equipment that doesn’t emit fluorinated gases.
